P&G DISMISSES OLESTRA STUDY

Procter & Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio has dismissed a British study that says its Olestra fat substitute has too many troubling side effects. P&G says the study tested another substance called SPE, which is similar to Olestra, but not equivalent. In addition, the study was conducted over two years ago, long before the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved Olestra and restated its safety in June. The study found that people who ate SPE had lower levels of vitamin E and nutrients known as carotenoids. When the FDA approved Olestra, it specified that the vitamins, including vitamin E, be added.
