PRIVATE LABELS GAINING GROUND

Private labels are continuing to take market share from national brand manufacturers, according to Nielsen Marketing Research. The Canadian market share for private labels has grown by 12% to a 24.5% share. Saskatchewan is the biggest market for private labels; they have 33.4% of the market there, with a growth rate of 5%. Manitoba ranks second with a 31.1% share of the market and growth rate of 5%. Manitoba is followed by B.C. with 29.4%, Alberta with 28.1% and Ontario with 25.5%. Atlantic Canada follows with 23.5% and Quebec ranks last at 16.8%. The fastest growth rate is in Ontario, at 14%.
