TORONTO REVAMPS YONGE STREET

The downtown core of the City of Toronto is being rejuvenated. City council has voted to revamp the area, with the project being completed by the year 2000. The changes will occur on Toronto's most popular street, Yonge St. It will now be home to the Metropolis, an entertainment complex with a 34-screen theatre, an urban square, a large hotel and another entertainment-focused centre. The new businesses will be located in the Yonge St and Dundas St. area, near the Eaton's Centre. To promote the new Yonge St. to businesses, residents and tourists, the Yonge Street Business and Resident Association developed a new identity program for the area. The group has renamed the area DownTown Yonge St. and will use the tagline, "DO T.O." The new identity will appear on signs in the area and on merchandise to be sold by merchants. Individual retailers will also use the identity in their advertising. The new identity was created by Gottschalk + Ash International of Toronto.
