KLUWER MOVES FURTHER INTO CANADIAN TAX PREP BUSINESS

Wolters Kluwer of Amsterdam has bought the assets of SoftKey, a Canadian subsidiary of The Learning Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The purchase includes tax preparation software. The programs will be marketed in Canada by the Tax Compliance division of CCH Canadian of Toronto, which is owned by Wolters Kluwer. The programs include Cantax, TaxPrep, Informatrix and HomeTax. Various agencies handle advertising for the software. Until now, CCH has dabbled into small joint ventures in marketing software, but this is the first time it will do so on its own, CCH president John Pineo told Adnews yesterday. Most of the programs are geared to large corporate users, but there is software for personal income tax preparation as well. Wolters Kluwer operates in 26 countries. Its core activities include legal and tax publishing, business publishing, medical/scientific publishing, educational publishing/professional training and trade publishing for selected markets.
