CANADIAN TOURISM ON THE RISE
By Adnews Staff
Tourism spending in Canada rose 4.4% during the first quarter of 1998, according to the National Tourism Indicators estimates. The industry pumped nearly $8.8 billion into the Canadian economy, an increase of $370 million when compared to the same period last year. Foreign tourism rose 2.7%, but Canadians are traveling even more with a 4.8% jump. Foreign spending didn't have a good showing mainly because of the economic situation in Asia, where the number of visits from the region dropped by more than 30%. However, Americans made up for the loss as their overnight and same day visits to Canada increased by 6.7%. The National Tourism Indicators is a joint product of Statistics Canada and the Canadian Tourism Commission.
