NIKE AND BAUER FORM SINGLE HOCKEY UNIT

Nike Inc. of Beaverton, Oregon has merged its hockey equipment unit with U.S.-based Bauer Inc., but it will take a few months to decide who will handle Canadian advertising for the division, Nike Canada spokesperson Michelle McSorley told Adnews yesterday. Bauer Inc. became part of Nike in 1995 when Nike bought Canstar Sports Inc., a division of Bauer. Since then, the duo have been operating independently. Canadian advertising for Bauer is done by Diesel Marketing Inc. and PNMD Communications, both of Montreal. Canadian advertising for Nike is created by Weiden & Kennedy of Portland, Oregon and Cossette Communication Marketing of Toronto. The unit will market a line of hockey equipment including ice and roller hockey skates, protective gear, sticks and in-line skates.
