EVENT ORGANIZERS HAVE FIVE YEARS TO FIND NEW SPONSORS

Organizers of special events received a five-year reprieve from the Federal government's crackdown on tobacco sponsorships. Under the deal, events that are sponsored by tobacco companies will have five years to search for a new sponsor. For the next two years, tobacco sponsorships can continue unrestricted, then they will be restricted for three years before being banned. During the final three years, off-site sponsorships will be restricted to direct mailings to adults, to publications with an adult readership and to bars and taverns where minors are not permitted. In addition, off-site ads will be restricted to the bottom one-tenth of any ad. At the end of five years, tobacco sponsorships will be banned.
