GROCERY STORES RANK NUMBER ONE

Consumers spend far more of their their money in grocery stores than in any other sort of retail outlet, according to Nielsen Marketing Research. According to its study of how Canadian households spend their shopping dollars, 37.7% of those dollars go to grocery stores. Mass merchandisers are second on the list but far behind at 7.7%. Department stores rank third with 7.5% of consumers money being spent in them, followed by drug stores at 6.7%. After drug stores come general merchandise outlets, warehouse clubs, hardware stores and then convenience stores. When it comes to people coming through the door, drug stores come out on top of the list. The percentage of Canadian households that shop at drug stores, according to Nielsen, is 98.7%. For grocery stores it is 94.5%.
