INTERNET ADVERTISING REVENUES ON THE RISE

Revenues from Internet advertising reached $10 million last year, according to a study commissioned by the Internet Advertising Bureau of Canada. In addition, the study predicts that industry revenues will rise to $22.9 million in 1998 and $56.9 million in 1999. Banner ads, the electronic strip that appears horizontally usually at the top or bottom of a page, accounted for more than 59% of total revenues. Financial services leads the way in Internet advertising, spending $2.1 million last year. The survey was conducted by Ernst & Young of Toronto. Respondents were selected from a list of 196 Canadian Web sites, narrowed down to more than 60 Web entities, who were thought to generate meaningful advertising revenues. IAB Canada was formed in 1997 and is comprised of Internet advertising and marketing professionals.
