TEA GAINING IN POPULARITY

Canadians love their tea. Tea sales jumped to over $218 million in 1997, according to statistics compiled by the Tea Council of Canada. This compares to $200 million in sales in 1996. Although regular tea is still the most popular, people aren't shying away from specialty teas. Iced tea sales increased 2% nationally last year to $82.6 million. Green tea sales rose 73% nationally to $1.5 million. Sales of green tea in British Columbia doubled to $288,000. Ontario green tea sales jumped 68% to about $500,000.
