CAMPAIGN PROMOTES AWARENESS

The Canadian Association of Community Living recently launched a national public awareness campaign to tell Canadians that most people with intellectual disabilities live in poverty. The campaign uses billboards, as well as street level and indoor shopping mall ads. The ads focus on the story of Don, a survivor of institutions and long-time abuse, who continues to live in poverty despite progress he’s made towards independence and participation. The ads were created by Gould Outdoor Advertising of Toronto. Gould and the Outdoor Partnership have donated the space for the ads. This campaign is the third annual campaign which has been sponsored by Gould. The Canadian Association for Community Living works to ensure all people who have intellectual disabilities are accepted as members of their communities within families, with friends, at school and in the workplace. According to Statistics Canada, 77% of adults who have been labeled as having an intellectual disability and who don’t live with their parents are living in poverty.
