CBC MOVES INTO VICTORIA

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has been given approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to bring local CBC Radio One service to Victoria, B.C. The new CBC Radio One station in Victoria will broadcast throughout Greater Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island on 90.5 FM. A rebroadcaster on 99.5 FM will service the Sooke/Metchosin area. The new transmitters will rectify reception problems experienced by many Victoria listeners to CBC Radio on 690 AM from Vancouver. A production bureau with studios in downtown Victoria will broadcast a three-hour weekday morning program between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., providing coverage of Victoria and Vancouver events, issues and personalities, as well as relevant news from the rest of the province, the country and around the world. During the rest of the day and week, the station will insert local information updates into CBC Radio One provincial and national network program schedules. Until now, Victoria has been the only provincial capital without a local CBC presence.
