SEARS LENDS ITS HAND TO COMPUTER COLLECTION PROGRAM
By Adnews Staff
Toronto-based Sears Canada is trying to get companies to donate their old computers to schools and libraries across Canada. The retailer has teamed up with Industry Canada and the Telephone Pioneers of Ottawa to help get 100,000 computers in schools and libraries by the year 2000. The computers are given to the Computers for Schools program, which refurbishes them, then sends them to schools or libraries in need. The program was developed in 1991 by Industry Canada, the Telephone Pioneers, businesses, volunteers, communities and governments. So far, it has collected 40,000 computers. Sears will promote the program using flyers, in-store signs and PR. The program will also be supported in Sears' catalogues. Advertising for Sears is done in-house.
