GOVERNMENT OFFERS COMPUTER DISCOUNTS

The New Brunswick provincial government began offering consumers in the province 15% discounts on personal computers earlier this month. Under the deal, consumers purchase the computer, then send the receipt to the government in order to receive the rebate. In addition, they will receive three months of free Internet access from NBTel. Consumers can choose from three different services: Sympatico, NBNet or Vibe. Sympatico is for new users while Vibe is for people who want extreme-speed Internet access. The service is up to 150 times faster than a 28.8 modem, allowing users to send and receive interactive local multimedia content, pictures, stereo sound, movies and video phone calls. Consumers sign up through the computer dealers. NBTel is promoting the service using radio and print advertising done by Simpson Gilbert of Sackville, New Brunswick. Co-op TV ads are also being used. The government, NBTel and Fundy Cable, the other partner in the program, launched these ads. They were also created by Simpson Gilbert.
