COMPAQ JUMPS PAST IBM

Compaq Canada of Richmond Hill, Ont. has edged ahead of IBM Canada in the race for market share during the first six months of 1997, according to a study by Stanley L. Jacobs Research Inc. of Toronto. Compaq's market share for laptops, desktops and servers reached 14.5%, compared to IBM's 13.5%. Apple Canada's market share continued downward to 5.9%. Total shipments of all PCs, mobiles and servers by the 25 computer vendors Jacobs surveyed were 953,105. In all of 1996, shipments were 1.8 million. According to IDC of Toronto, Compaq was the top dog in the second quarter of the year with a 15.4% market share, ahead of IBM's 15%. Although Compaq is dominating the server market, the computer maker slipped behind IBM of Markham, Ont. in the desktop and portable PC markets. The overall PC market grew 10.5% in the second quarter, when compared to the same time last year.
