TOBACCO INDUSTRIES TOLD TO BUTT OUT IN ASIA
By Adnews Staff
Asian governments are clamping down on the tobacco industry, according to a Wall Street Journal report. In Seoul, South Korea, the municipal government banned cigarette vending machines earlier this year because more than half of the minors who smoke buy their cigarettes from such machines. The city later lifted the ban, but made it illegal to sell cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18. Similar limits have been established in Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea. China has stamped out most forms of tobacco advertising. In Singapore it is illegal for minors to possess cigarettes. The anti-tobacco sentiment is gaining momentum just as American tobacco companies are looking East for new markets.
