APPLE CHAIRMAN QUITS

U.S.-based Apple Computer Inc. chairman and CEO Gilbert Amelio has resigned after trying to bring the struggling computer maker to profitability for 17 months. For the interim, Steve Jobs, the ousted co-founder who returned in December to advise Amelio, will take on an expanded role. In 1985, John Sculley ousted Jobs, then eight years later was replaced by Michael Spindler, who kept the position until 1996 when he was forced to step down in favor of Amelio.
