COMPAQ BUYS TANDEM

Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston has bought U.S.-based Tandem Computers Inc. in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at $3 billion(US). Under the deal, Tandem will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Compaq. In Canada, both companies will continue to operate as separate wholly-owned subsiddiaries of their American parent companies. The move was made so each company could enhance their enterprise computing markets. In Canada, advertising for Compaq is done by Ammirati & Puris/Lintas of Toronto. PR is done by Cohn & Wolfe of Toronto. Canadian advertising for Tandem is done by the company's U.S. agency, Anderson & Lembke's San Francisco office. Canadian media buying is handled in-house by the company's Canadian headquarters. Mainstay Communications of Toronto does Canadian PR.
