CONSUMERS ARE OPENING THEIR WALLETS MORE

Canadian retail sales rose 1.1% in April and Statistics Canada says this could be a sign of the times to come. Canadians spent $19.1 billion on goods during the month, up 7.2% from a year earlier. In dollar terms, the strongest was the automotive sector where sales rose 14.1% from March to $7.26 billion. Department storre sales rose 1.5% to $6.36 billion. Furniture and appliance sales were up .5% while drug sales rose 1.3% and clothing and show sales increased by .8%. Only the food sector saw a drop in sales but they are still higher than a year earlier. In February, Statistics Canada says sales dropped .8%.
