COUPON USE GAINING POPULARITY

More Canadians are using product coupons to receive discounts on their purchases, according to a report from the Coupon Industry Council of Canada. Canadians redeemed three million more coupons last year than they did in 1995. Last year, manufacturers distributed 3.3 billion coupons, which is 8% more than the year before. Canadians also benefitted from higher coupon values which rose to 70 cents each on average, compared to 68 cents in 1995. Direct mail coupons sent to consumers who responded to a product use questionaire had a value of $1.20 on average. Shoppers using discount coupons on purchases of grocery and personal care products saved $100 million in 1996.
