NEC PULLS INTO FAST LANE

U.S.-based NEC Computer Systems Divisions announced this week that it will introduce two new computer models incorporating U.S. Robotics' x2 modem technology to the North American market on June 1. Called the 9712SE and 9716SE, the machines will be part of NEC's Ready line of computers and will operate at modem speeds of 56 Kbps. All Ready systems are designed to run straight out of the box. The new models will be available with 166 MHz and 200 MHz Pentium processors, or Pentium processors with MMX technology. The systems also include either 16 or 32 MB of RAM, a 2.1 to 4.3 GB hard drive, a 16X CD-ROM drive and pre-installed software. Advertising plans for the new models have not been finalized. The Cohen Group of Toronto handles advertising for NEC Computer Systems Division Canada of Mississauga, Ont. Continental Communications handles NEC's PR in Canada.
