STUDY SAYS CANADIAN CABLE CHEAPER THAN U.S.

The Canadian Cable Television Assoc. is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a study that says cable subscribers in major U.S. media centres pay 60% more for their services and receive less quality family programming than their Canadian counterparts. Conducted by Price Waterhouse, the study examined cable TV in Halifax, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, New York and Los Angeles. The study also found that subscribers in the 10 largest U.S. cities pay almost 40% more than cable users in the 10 largest Canadian centres. Although all six of the cities studied received about the same amount of children's programming, Canadian children's content was carried largely on the basic cable tier, while U.S. content was provided mostly by specialty services. The Canadian Cable Television Assoc. represents 962 members across the country.
