By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based Intel Corp. officially launched its new Pentium II processor yesterday and computer manufacturers have already introduced models incorporating the technology. Available in speeds of 300, 266 and 233 MHz, the Pentium II processor combines the technology of Intel's Pentium Pro with the company's recently introduced MMX enhancements. The 233 and 266 MHz versions of the chip are available immediately, while the 300 MHz model is scheduled for a third-quarter launch. Companies releasing computers with the Pentium II processor include U.S.-based firms NEC Computer Systems, International Business Machines and Compaq Computer Corp. NEC introduced a new corporate business systems line in North American, incorporating the Pentium II called the NEC PowerMate Professional. Available in 266 and 233 MHz versions, NEC says the new line is ideal for Internet and intranet applications, CAD/CAM, image manipulation, office suites and videoconferencing. In Canada, NEC will launch a national print campaign created by The Cohen Group Inc. of Toronto to support the line's launch. Continental Communications of Toronto is providing Canadian PR support. Compaq made the new chip available in North America in its Deskpro 4000 and 6000 desktop lines in 233 and 266 MHz versions. The Deskpro 4000 is designed for mainstream business users, while the 6000 is designed for users seeking greater PC power. Cohn & Wolfe of Toronto is providing Canadian PR support for both Intel and Compaq. IBM has launched a new workstation line in North America called the IntelliStation M Pro and a commercial desktop series called the PC 300XL. Both use the Pentium II. The 300XL line is designed for high-end commercial use, while the workstation is aimed at commercial users running mechanical computer-aided design, electronic computer-aided design, digital media content creation, software development and financial services applications.
