COMPAQ OUTRUNS IBM

Compaq Canada of Richmond Hill, Ont. is at the top of the hill. The computer maker has grabbed the lead in Canadian computer sales for the last quarter, reaching 16% of market share, according to International Data Corp. IBM Canada came in second with 15%. This is an improvement over last year's Compaq sales. In 1996, Compaq slipped to 12%, with IBM leading at 15%. Compaq fared well in the commercial desktop and server markets, but fell behind in the consumer desktop market. The company won about 25% of commercial desktop sales, up to 45% of server sales, but only 5% of consumer PC sales. IBM had 19% of the commercial desktop sales. Overall, commercial desktop sales jumped by 28%, while sales of home computers fell 17%. Apple Canada took 15% of the home computer market.
