COMPAQ LAUNCHES NEW SERVERS

Compaq Corp. of Houston introduced two new servers to the North American market this week: the Compaq ProLiant 6000 system and the ProLiant 850R. The 6000 system is designed for business-critical computing, while the 850R system is intended for users wanting high performance in a space-saving, rack-ready format. Supporting up to four 200 MHz Intel Pentium Pro processors, the 6000 is ideal for large and expanding Internet, intranet, database, data warehousing, groupware, messaging and other resource-intensive applications. The system has 109 GB of internal storage and can be upgraded to the next-generation Intel processor technology. The ProLiant 850R supports up to two 200 MHz Pentium Pro processors. Compaq says the model is ideal for ISPs and other clients with growing server needs. In addition to introducing the two new server models, Compaq has introduced new rack and tower versions of the Compaq ProLiant 2500 system, and reduced the prices of its commercial desktop personal computers and servers as well as other selected PCs and servers by up to 53%. National print ads for the new servers will begin running next week. In Canada, Ammirati & Puris/Lintas of Toronto is handling Compaq's advertising, while Cohn & Wolfe, also of Toronto, is supporting Compaq's initiatives with PR.
