HOLLINGER TRIES TO TAKE MORE CONTROL OF SOUTHAM

Conrad Black wants the entire pie. His publishing company, Hollinger Canadian Publishing Holdings Inc. announced this week that it will make a bid to buy the rest of Southam Inc.'s shares for $922.7 million. Hollinger is already a 51% indirect owner of Southam. Separately, Southam has bought The Daily News from Newfoundland Capital Corp. The daily tabloid newspaper serves Halifax, N.S., and has a Monday to Saturday circulation of 27,500. Its Sunday edition has a circulation of 44,500. Southam publishes 32 daily newspapers across Canada.
