The federal government has given approval to a Telesat Canada plan to build a high-powered Canadian direct broadcast satellite. Telesat says the satellite, which would carry the signals of Canadian direct-to-home satellite television companies, could be in service by late 1998. Telesat is currently offering DTH services on its Anik satellites. Based in Ottawa, Telesat is a satellite communications company, providing telecommunications and broadcast distribution services throughout North America.
