Humanitarian Coalition conducts Ukraine campaign

The Humanitarian Coalition, an initiative of 12 aid organizations intended to provide Canadians with a simple way to donate during large-scale humanitarian emergencies, has begun a campaign called “A Prompt for Ukraine.” The effort is timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Developed by Performance Art of Toronto, it consists of a 90-second video depicting a conversation with a “ChatGPT-like” artificial intelligence program. During the conversation, the user asks the AI for details about Ukraine. The AI responds in ways that indicate it has no knowledge of the ongoing war. The video concludes by encouraging viewers to donate to the coalition. It is being supported with social media content.

“One of the world’s most popular AI chatbots is essentially unaware that there’s a major war happening in Ukraine,” said Ian Mackenzie, chief creative officer at Performance Art. “Working with the Humanitarian Coalition, we found a data bias that would normally be seen as a negative and are using it to reactivate a sense of hope that donations can and do still make a difference in the lives of those who are suffering.”
