BEATRICE SOLD

Parmalat Finanziaria s.p.a. of Italy bought Beatrice Foods last week for approximately $290 million. The sale is expected to close in mid-April. Beatrice operates 23 processing facilities in Canada and the U.S., producing fluid milk, yogurt, fruit juices and drinks, cheese, cream cheese, butter, private-label cookies and other foodstuffs. Parmalat has annual sales of $3.5 billion (U.S.) It operates primarily in Italy, Portugal, Hungary, Brazil and Venezuela. Parmalat brands include Parmalat (milk), Kyr (yogurt), Chef (cream sauces), Pomi (tomato-based products), and Santal (fruit juices). The Leo Burnett Company Ltd. of Toronto handles advertising for Beatrice.
