MICROSOFT IS TOP WEB ADVERTISING SPENDER

U.S.-based Microsoft Corp. was the biggest advertiser on the World Wide Web last year, according to U.S.-based Jupiter Communications. The company spent $13 million(US), outpacing the number-two advertiser by a nearly two-to-one margin. This was U.S.-based AT&T, which spent $7.3 million(US). The top Web publisher was Netscape Communications, generating $27.7 million in revenues. Yahoo! was second with $20.6 million, followed by Infoseek with $18.1 million. Only four of the top spenders were not among the top publishers: Microsoft, AT&T, International Business Machines Corp. and Nynex. Total on-line ad spending reached $301 million last year, with $260 million on the Web, $41 million on on-line services and push technologies like PointCast, and $18 million on on-line Yellow Pages and classified ads.
