Competition Bureau warns against misleading weight loss ads

The Ottawa-based Competition Bureau has issued a call for sellers and marketers of natural health products in Canada to review their advertising for false, misleading or unsubstantiated claims. The bureau has stated that such claims are illegal under the Competition Act and has warned that a product licence from Health Canada will not protect offending companies from enforcement action if advertising claims of effectiveness are not based on adequate testing.
“Today we are sending a strong signal to the natural health products industry,” said Matthew Boswell, interim Commissioner of Competition. “Weight loss claims must not be false, misleading or unsubstantiated. Don’t lure consumers with false promises.”
