Toronto Public Library begins social media promotion

The Toronto Public Library has begun a social media promotion called "Toronto Writes a Book." The initiative encourages residents of the city to contribute to a book which will be written one line at a time via Twitter. The book begins with a sentence contributed by city librarian Vickery Bowles: "I sat on a bench reading my book in the waterfront's early morning sunshine when a jogger suddenly stopped in his tracks and approached me with a knowing smile."

Consumers can submit suggestions for the next sentence by posting to Twitter. Each day in August, the library will select two lines and make them available for online public voting. The winning line will be appended to the ongoing story. The promotion will include the participation of a number of local authors, personalities and organizations.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing what story we come up with together as a city," said Bowles. "Toronto is home to so many diverse voices and experiences, and this story will celebrate that diversity by telling a story through a collaboration of thoughts, ideas and creativity."
