INTERNET USE ON THE RISE

Over the past year, the Internet has become accepted as a mainstream medium, according to ACNielsen's Internet Survey 96. Twenty-three per cent of Canadians aged 12 and over use the Internet. Within that group 11% have made a purchase via the Internet, and another 37% plan to do so soon. Eighty-two per cent of those who had made a purchase on the Internet would likely do so again. Thirteen per cent of Canadians access the Internet from home, while 8% access it from work. Five per cent go on-line at school. The gender gap on the Internet is closing. Although 57% of Internet users are male, of those people who have started to use the Internet in the past six months, 51% are female. Three quarters of Internet users are concerned about making a credit card payment over the Internet. The study surveyed over 13,000 Canadians in October.
