COREL SHELVES PLANS FOR HAND-HELD COMPUTER

Ottawa-based software giant Corel Corp. has abandoned its plans to market a hand-held computer. Instead it will concentrate on a low-cost network computer to be launched next March. Corel's hand-held machine was to run software based on Java, a programming language that is battling Microsoft Windows software as a standard for operating systems. Microsoft unveiled its Windows CE operating system for hand-held computers last month, as well as a consortium that is to push the new software for the company. Advertising for Corel is done in-house.
