Environmental Defence releases algal bloom video

Toronto-based non-profit organization Environmental Defence has released an online video intended to raise awareness of the problem of algal blooms in Lake Erie. The animated video uses the style of a comic book to depict the bloom as a slime monster. The video highlights the causes of algal blooms and their impact on the lake, including beach closures, dead fish and unsafe drinking water.

"This summer, the biggest, meanest slime monster isn't in a blockbuster movie, it's on Lake Erie," said Keith Brooks, campaigns director at Environmental Defence. "Lake Erie provides drinking water and jobs for thousands of people. We need to act now to stop it from getting slimed over by large mats of algae every year. By using humour in our video, we hope to raise awareness about this problem plaguing one of our Great Lakes, and reach more people and encourage them to get involved."
