CRTC orders Radio India off air

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has ordered Radio India to not carry on any broadcasting undertakings in Canada without a licence. At a hearing last month, the CRTC found that Radio India produces programming for radio broadcast at its studios in Surrey, BC, then has it transmitted through an agreement with US-based Way Broadcasting Operating using a transmitter in Blaine, WA that reaches into Canada. The CRTC also found that the majority of Radio India's revenue comes from Canadian advertisers.

Under the terms of the order, Radio India must cease having its programming broadcast from the US by the end of today. It is also prohibited from carrying on a broadcasting undertaking in Surrey or anywhere else in Canada, except in compliance with the Broadcasting Act. The order does not affect Radio India's Internet streaming programming.

"Operating without an authority is one of the most serious offences under the Broadcasting Act," said Tom Pentefountas, vice-chairman of broadcasting at the CRTC. "We will not tolerate any business or individual that is broadcasting illegally in Canada. The issuance of these mandatory orders demonstrates that we are committed to maintaining the integrity of the Canadians broadcasting system. We will not hesitate to act when necessary."
