Shaw Media proposes new national news channel

Shaw Media of Toronto has submitted an application to the CRTC to operate a new national, English-language specialty television service called Global News 1. The proposed channel would incorporate separate local news feeds covering up to 28 communities, as well as regional and national news feeds. If approved, Global News 1 will incorporate distinct local feeds in the 12 markets in which Global currently has conventional television stations. In addition, the company proposes to create local newsrooms in eight other communities where there is little or no local television news. Shaw Media also proposes to open the channel to eight small-market independent broadcasters, allowing them to add their own local content to the service and retain the local advertising.

"As a leading network and content-experience company, we're excited about the ability of Global News 1 to meet the changing needs of consumers," said Troy Reeb, senior vice-president of news and station operations at Shaw Media. "Canadians have made clear the vital importance they place on local news at the same time as they are increasingly turning to 24/7 sources. Global News 1 will connect Canadians not just to the stories that shape their neighborhoods, but that tie the country together."
