York Region radio station to launch

A new FM radio station called 105.9 The Region will launch in Toronto on Feb. 5. The station will broadcast adult contemporary music and local information aimed primarily at residents of York Region. Broadcasts will take place in English during the day, followed by evening programming in Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, Tanglish, Urdu and Arabic.

The station will launch with a series of live remote broadcasts and a contest. Listeners who email the station with their favourite places to eat, shop or visit in York Region will be entered into a draw for a prize package including two tickets to the Flato Markham Theatre, flowers from Tim Clarks Flowers of Markham, chocolate truffles from the Old Firehall Confectionery of Unionville and a night at the Delta Markham Hotel.

"From local news, sports and weather to details on community events and updates about the Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill municipal governments, 105.9 The Region will have the information people want to hear about their local community," said Pip Bola, president 105.9 The Region. "The official launch will feature four live remotes in York Region where talented on-air hosts will interview guests ranging from mayors and CEOs of charities operating in York Region to local business owners."
