CABLE PROFITS WAY UP

Statistics Canada is reporting a 26% rise in cable television industry profits in 1995. Total cable revenues came to roughly $2.5 billion last year, while expenses clocked in at $2.35 billion, for a tidy profit of $326 million. Ninety-four percent of cable revenues comes from consumer subscriptions, and StatsCan estimates about a third last year's increase came from optional-extra services such as movie and sports channels. The industry gained about 140,000 subscribers in 1995, bringing the total number of Canadian cable subscribers to 7.23 million.
