ALBERTA STRIKES DOWN ELECTION SPENDING LAW
By Adnews Staff
The Alberta Court of Appeal struck down a federal law earlier this month that limited third-party election spending. The court ruled that the law was unconstitutional, and impairing the right to vote and the freedoms of expression and association. An amendment to the Canada Elections Act stated that citizens and lobby groups could spend no more than $1,000 each during federal campaigns to directly attack a candidate or federal political party. But, those same citizens and lobby groups could spend much more to support a candidate or party. This law has been struck down, and there is no longer a spending limit.
