Advertising Standards Canada releases 2007 complaints report

Toronto-based Advertising Standards Canada has released its 2007 Ad Complaints Report. The report provides information about consumer complaints submitted to the body last year for review under the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. In 2007, the organization received 1,445 complaints about 980 ads. Of these, 193 complaints about 56 ads were determined to contravene the code. "For the third consecutive year, more complaints were submitted to ASC about advertising by retailers than any other category," said Janet Feasby, vice-president of standards. "Consumers cited concerns about advertisements in both traditional media and on the Internet that they believed were inaccurate, lacked clarity, or omitted pertinent information." In 2006 the group received 1,040 complaints about 723 ads, upholding 95 complaints about 40 ads. The report is available through the organization's website at <http://www.adstandards.com>.
