A&P GETTING SMALLER AGAIN

The Canadian arm of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. Ltd. will close six Ontario stores by the end of August. The downsizing is part of a revamping that began a year ago in a bid to make the company profitable again. A&P is also dropping its Miracle Food Mart banner and converting many of those 63 stores to other names under the A&P umbrella. They include A&P, Dominion, Dominion Plus, D Save A Centre and Super Fresh. The company also opened a no-frills discount franchise operation about a year ago under the name Basics. A&P in Canada showed a small profit last year, after losing money for three consecutive years. Advertising for A&P in Canada is done by Prism Communications of Toronto.
