Workplace Safety and Insurance Board begins new campaign

The Toronto-based Workplace Safety and Insurance Board has begun a new campaign intended to encourage young workers to learn about workplace safety. The campaign, which is aimed at 15- to 19-year-olds, consists of animated ads in movie theatres, as well as transit and online advertising. The ads invite viewers to visit the Prevent-it.ca website for more information and to enter a draw for phones, video game consoles, MP3 players and scholarships. The site also hosts a collection of student-produced videos on the subject of workplace safety submitted as part of a contest conducted by the board earlier this year. The website also offers a downloadable booklet called “A Parents Guide to Keeping Teens Safe at Work” and an information kit for employers. “We want young workers to make the connection between what they gain by learning about workplace safety and what they stand to lose if they’re injured or even killed on the job,” said Steve Mahoney, chair of the organization. “This campaign, along with our other initiatives like the student video contest, will bring us closer to our goal of the elimination of all workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.”
