CABLE LICENCE APPLICATIONS

Four companies are re-applying to the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission for a sports cable network that's close to home. The companies involved in the previously unsuccessful application are CTV Television Network, The Molson Companies Ltd., Rogers Programming Services and LMC International. The network would have four regional stations under the S3 banner, covering major local sporting events. In a 1993 study by Goldfarb Consultants, 83% of respondents said they would more likely watch a sports event if a local team werer playing. Rogers Programming is part of Rogers Communications, which has the largest cable operation in Canada. LMC owns, or is involved with 25 U.S. regional sports networks.
