CITIZENS CAN FIGHT CORPORATIONS
By Adnews Staff
Private citizens will get the right to use the Competition Act to fight unfair or anti-competitive corporate practices in changes being considered by the federal government. For example, a cable subscriber could contest a merger such as the one in which Rogers Communications bought Maclean Hunter last year. A consumer group could go after a corporation for unfair pricing. Currently, only the director of competition policy can refer a case to the federal Bureau of Competition Policy. Other possible changes include new powers to address deceptive telemarketing promotions or prevent anti-competitive and deceptive practices originating outside Canada, and quicker resolution of competition issues.
