CanWest Global Communications has purchased US-based political magazine The New Republic through a subsidiary. The company had owned 30% of the magazine since last year. Greg MacNeil has been appointed interim publisher. Marty Peretz will continue as editor-in-chief. According to CanWest, the magazine is undergoing an overhaul that will include a new design, larger issues, a new website and a new frequency of publication. “The New Republic, similar to CanWest's other publications, has a strong foundation and a proud history,” said Tom Strike, president of CanWest MediaWorks International. “In today's media environment, we need to place a priority on delivering quality content to readers when, where and how they want it. The New Republic is well-positioned to do just that.”
