NUMBER OF LOW-FAT PRODUCTS INCREASING

The number of new fat- and cholesterol-reduced foods in the U.S. were at an all-time high in 1995, according to a survey done by Find/SVP of New York. There were 965 new items last year, which is nearly 40% higher than the number of new ones in 1994. Snack foods showed a 60% increase last year over 1994, and baked goods and prepared foods each had growth of about 44%. Refrigerated yogurts grew 72% and sales of salty/crunchy snacks jumped 62%. Southwestern and Mexican foods represented almost 10% of the new products in 1995. Among international cuisines, 56% were available in Italian/Sicilian varieties. Asian products made up over a quarter of the international foods. Low-fat food for kids made up just 3% of the market last year.
