McDonald's readies Olympic promotions

McDonald's Canada of Toronto has released the details of its promotional activities related to the upcoming Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. New advertising creative and packaging will be released that will "celebrate Olympic dreams and passion." Also, a number of vignettes featuring fans and athletes will be produced by McDonald's and CBC Sports. The company has also formed a group of past and current Olympic athletes called "Team McDonald's" that will participate in a variety of promotional activities related to the games. Other promotions will include a special Gold Medal Meal which will be sold during February. For each meal purchases, the company will make a donation to the "Own the Podium - 2010" athlete support program. McDonald's will also sell a collection of six Team Canada mini hockey jerseys that will be available with the purchase of certain menu items. In addition, Six Canadian employees of the company will be travel to the games to work in the McDonald's locations there. These workers will write about the experience on a weblog that will launch in early February. McDonald's is the official restaurant of the Olympic Games. Advertising for McDonald's is handled by Cossette. Public relations are handled by Weber Shandwick Worldwide.
