National No Sweat campaign begins

Pharmaceutical company Allergan, in association with the Canadian Dermatology Association, has begun a month-long campaign intended to raise awareness of hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. As part of the promotion, July has been declared national "No Sweat" month by these organizations. According to the association, approximately 300,000 Canadians suffer from severe hyperhidrosis, which can cause them to sweat up to four times more than an average person. The campaign will include brochures about the condition containing information about treatment options which are being distributed through dermatologists' offices. Promotion will also include national radio ads in some markets, created by Jeffery Simbrow & Associates of Toronto. A website has also been constructed at <http://www.sweatmanagement.ca>. Public relations are being conducted by National. "Only 38 percent of hyperhidrosis sufferers talk to a doctor because they don't realize that this is a medical condition that can be treated," said Harvey Lui, president of the association. "There is still a vacuum of public information for sufferers of this debilitating condition. Some individuals experience depression as a result of social anxieties caused by excessive sweating that can literally drench their clothing. It is important to inform these hyperhidrosis sufferers that they can get help." Allergan produces Botox, which is a treatment for hyperhidrosis.
