MEDIACOM PULLS TOBACCO ADS
By Adnews Staff
Mediacom of Toronto is pulling its tobacco advertisers out of Toronto transit shelters on July 1. The outdoor company made the decision last week, just as Toronto's board of health was preparing to discuss the matter. City councillors were concerned such advertising undermines anti-smoking efforts by the city which has banned smoking in all public places. Mediacom decided it would be best to stop selling space to tobacco firms after receiving complaints from associations, city councillors and individuals. Currently, less than 5% of shelter advertising is for tobacco but Mediacom was prepared to let that grow to 25%.
